Life and activity in Kefalonia and Ithaca follows the rhythm of the seasons, the climate and the deep rooted traditions that are characteristic of the region.  Although the development of the tourism industry has certainly altered the lifestyle of the locals in recent decades, the relaxed, fun-loving pace is still a way of life.

The islands really come alive from mid spring well into the fall as thousands of tourists share these lovely islands with the locals. Most of the significant local festivities take place during this period, allowing the visitor to get a “front row view” of the real Kefalonia and Ithaca. Dances, outdoor concerts, local cuisine and wine festivals, religious celebrations and other traditional activities are the daily fare in the summer.

For the more adventurous visitor, there is always an opportunity to explore the more remote villages and walk into an unexpected traditional activity such as grape gathering, weaving, or bread and cheese making. 

Kefalonia and Ithaca, like all the Ionian Islands, carry heavy influences in their traditions from the Venetian, and Italian history. As a result they are much more western-oriented than the rest of the country which has more eastern influences. In addition to architecture and art, these influences are evident in local music and dance and give local festivities a special character.
